Sign up for our Nutrition program! It's available to anyone, anywhere: www.poundofcureweightloss.com/nutrition
Episode 29 of The Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast is titled, Wegovy for the Long Run. The title comes from our In the News segment where we discuss an article in US News titled, More Studies Support Wegovy's Long-Term Weight-Loss Benefits. This article details the outcomes of the SELECT trial which showed that long-term use of Wegovy provided continued weight loss and cardiovascular benefits.
In our Patient Story segment, we talk to Armetta - one of my most memorable patients. She ended up having surgery in Mexico because of an exclusion policy on her insurance plan. After a serious complication, she became one of my double black diamond cases, and her insurance company ended up spending 1.5 million dollars on her treatment because of the complication. It’s a fascinating story.
Before the invention of popular sports drinks, most people didn’t know what electrolytes were. Now it’s one of our most frequently asked questions. Do you really need to drink sports drinks to replenish your electrolytes? Zoe answers this question in our Nutrition segment.
In out Economics of Obesity segment, we talk about going to Mexico for bariatric surgery. Many people choose this option thinking that it’s less expensive. But when 95% of all insurance plans cover bariatric surgery coupled with the higher complications rates and lack of post-op care, is it really the best choice?
Finally, we answer 3 of our listeners questions including, whether or not the Metabolic Reset Diet works for Vegans, the mechanics of the sleeve that contribute to GERD, and what strategies to employ to maintain your weight while on GLP-1 medications.

Another excellent episode.
Thank you!
I am 10 years out from my bypass and really struggling to keep from gaining weight. I have gained about 20# over the last 2.5 years or so. Insurance won't approve me trying the new GLP meds.

Ah yes keeping up the myth that msg is bad for you pretending to know whay youre talking about.....
Hello, is it possible to get a copy of the metabolic reset diet discussed in this video? I started at 372 10 months ahead of surgery, was 323 day of surgery in late Aug. 2023 and am currently 222. I am doing ok but am coming off of extensive travel where I have been very active but been eating out and am off track. I am looking for something to help me get back on track as I am now a bit more stable at home and not traveling. Thanks Paul Ps, I enjoy this channel and glean a lot from it.
Absolutely, Paul. You can get our Free MRD handout on our website here: www.poundofcureweightloss.com/ Congratulations on your 150lb weight loss. That's amazing!
Do you have a more up to date version of this video, or are there no further updates needed since this was made? Love the Podcast and your books.
I’ve been with the same employer for 9 years. Can’t they see you have been with them awhile and actuary wise you will continue to be with them?
Your best bet is to petition your company to offer a healthcare plan that pays for these medications.
Which week do you recommend starting Bariatric vitamins
Great question! I’ll add it to our list to be answered, in-depth, on an upcoming episode of The Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast.
I am sooooo tired of puréed food. I’ve been close to chewing something normal and then just spitting it

Shhhhh
Ozempic sucks
Well, I'm can speak from my own experience as a VSG to RNY patient The only postoperative from my revision was dehydrated experienced a week out from surgery. I'm now 3 yrs post-op revision and I have zero complications. Other than some pre- menopausal weight gain that I'm using zepbound & back to wls basis to lose weight. When I had VSG, now that was a nightmare due to Gerd & stricture. I'm a member of those several FB wls groups. There are positive and negative after wls experiences.
After gastric bypas surgery no NSAIDS, does that also count for the sleeve gastrectomy? And the iron deficiency, is that the same for both types of wls?
The short answer is no. Both occur only after a bypass. Check out this video for more info: ua-cam.com/video/pBTVgOMB1pU/v-deo.html
So true. Do you wind up doing the same meal plans over and over again and that just does not help at all. I joined some vegan groups on Facebook because they have great healthy vegetable recipes. Now I’m not going to become vegan probably but I do eat some vegan meals through the week and I like vegetables on the side with some protein it helps me learn new things to fix to spice things up and helps keep me on track.
My favorite doctor. He has helped me so much with my bypass. His information is vital to a successful sustainable weight loss.
I always wonder where intelligence has gone. We had the Ancel Keys theory that blamed animal fats and promoted industrial seed oils and margerine. And the last decades we have been told that red meat is unhealthy, according to the WHO it falls in the same carcinogenic class as sigarettes. Use what is left of your brain 😅 We have been scavengers and later hunters for 2 millions of years. Our genes are fully adapted to eating red meat. Your stomach acids are even stronger that that of today predators. Your gut isn't that of gorilla's and chimps. Our brains developed on meat and have been shrinking the last 20.000 years since we started agriculture. Personally I don't like most beans, they make me fart and I know that they contain anti-nutrients. Their proteins are less bioabsorbable than those in meat and they don't have all the amino acids. Please only a small portion of my food as beans 😊

Is the no alcohol and bo smoking only right after surgery? Or forever?
Forever.
A Pound of Cure, Your videos are fantastic! I just had to subscribe!
Thank you. Glad you like them!
I'm in the UK, had a GBP in 2019 and find them very helpful and informative, as I've basically been left to just get on with it. No real guidance.
@@chyner1 Glad to be able to help you! We also offer an online nutrition program that you might like. A community of bariatric patients as well as our Dietitian, peer leaders, and Dr. Weiner. All sessions are held on Zoom. Check it out here: www.poundofcureweightloss.com/nutrition-counseling-memberships/
Well , I am in a facebook group for people who have had or are having Sleve to bypass revisions. Majority of the people have serious horrific complications. It’s like they’re trading one set of problems for a much worse set of problems.having the surgery except that the doctors don’t tell us how bad it can get. Now I’m on the fence I want to have the revision done, but I’m terrified to do it. I don’t think I’ll wind up going through it. And many of the people who have had the revision surgery and are having complications have said I didn’t know I was a guinea pig. I feel like they’re just using us to experiment on. I mean seriously that’s what it seems like. it’s not fair. People should be aware of how serious the complications can’t get
I was so happy when I was on GLP-1 meds that the food noise was just gone. Insurance won't pay for them anymore, so I'm getting ready for a VSG but worried about the temporary nature of the reduction of the food noise. Hoping the drugs come down in price by the time I need them
Does Insurence cover the surgery?
95% of insurance plans do cover bariatric surgery.
My first low dose of GLP1 shut down the food noise in my brain. Astounding. I had no idea how intrusive it was until it stopped. If this protocol does nothing more than that for me, I’ll take it willingly for the rest of my life.
What if we eat more than 30 grams? Like 40 grams? And how long after can we wait to do the walk?
Great question! I’ll put it on our list to be answered, in-depth, on an upcoming episode of The Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast.
The US healthcare system is wild. She can be treated with simple meds but insurance doesn't want to pay for it so she has to go into surgery.
Indeed. Once the price of these meds comes down that will flip.
Pre workout tastes good
I want the compounding pharmacies to counter-sue these pharmaceutical companies for gouging the public. There should be a regulations to stop these greedy companies from price gouging. It just doesn't make any sense.
Agree.
Some of us are busy Moms and have to eat on the road from one sporting event to the other. Have the beautiful lady thought about doing a fast food book for moms or dad on the run.
I am morbidly obese. I just love listening to the stories of your patience. It is helping me make a decision for my future
Glad to hear it!
Recently I have been making a smoothie with one small roasted beet, tofu, blueberries and 1/4 banana plus water and ice cubes plus a handful of spinach in the afternoons. Look your information.
never knew about this until I saw this video! more shorts pls!
I was the rare patient who needed blood and am so thankful I had such capable drs and hospital!
Should be noted that Mounjaro, Zepbound, and Trulicity all use the same pen… just with a different label (and different-colored injector button, in the case of Trulicity). And - at least in the clinical trials so far - the Retatrutide pen’s the same too. Eli Lilly *really* likes that particular pen, seems like.
Caseoh mewing right now 😅
Questions to ask: can stretching my stomach after 10 years of fastric sleeve would help to stop reactive hypoglycemia? Is Invokana a better treatment for reactive hypoglycemia caused by past gastric sleeve? How to manage Invokana side effects in the long term?
Great questions! I’ll put them on our list to be answered, in-depth, on an upcoming episode of The Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast.
From a woman who used to be close to 300 lbs who is 5’3 I will never understand why you make a conscious decision to navigate the inevitable chronic diseases and pain that WILL COME with OBESITY. People are always willing to spend decades chasing the next new thing in the meantime their physical and mental health suffers. I wish you can move past the shame and fear and realize obesity is a chronic illness. Weight loss surgery works. It’s not just the weight all of my labs and vitals are optimal as I approach 50. Had I still been obese I would likely have diabetes and high blood pressure and maybe more. It’s ok to have Weight Loss Surgery. I had a child after my sleeve and I had bad GERD so I had a revision from sleeve to bypass in 2020. I love life too much to be miserable.
Thank you for your response I really liked that you said obesity is a chronic illness I have to look at it that way I am currently 300 lb I know I'm going to need surgery but I'm afraid of the knife put your response in your and your statement is a big help to me
Would like to know what you think about phentermine?? Since my insurance doesn’t pay for other medications my bariatric doctor suggested this.
Great question! I’ll put it on our list to be answered, in-depth, on an upcoming episode of The Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast.
The nice part of Ozempic is the ability to change the dose with clicks
No side effects from 5mg so far ! Paying out of pocket unfortunately
Same this shit is expensive. No issues for me either so far.
I'm an rny patient. I'm down to 121 from 205. I want to be 110. I want to try monjoro,or wegovy. Am I a candidate? The food noise is back. 😢
Great question! I’ll put it on our list to be answered, in-depth, on an upcoming episode of The Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast.

How healthy is it for you? I’m nervous about the long term effects and how your body will function after you stop taking it
Acarbose is no longer available. What is your thoughts about Invokana for someone who has excellent health conditions except hypo caused by gastric sleeve.
Great question! I’ll put it on our list to be answered, in-depth, on an upcoming episode of The Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast.
I have regained 45 pounds and now going back to basics to lose again. I don’t think people realize how hard it is to keep the weight off. Depression, old eating habits, life changes etc, can cause weight gain again. I have my 3 year check up with my surgeon in July and I’m so disappointed in myself. I never thought I would be one to gain back weight.
My surgeon never don't me about regain- and when it happened I spiralled so hard into depression and bad habits that I'm sure I regained more then what I would have if I was prepared- I've now lost 10kgs of what I regained with a goal of 5kg more but it's been incredibly taxing journey
I’m boutta get some green tea asstrack
😂
