Episode 30: GLP-1 Supplement Scams #podcast
Sign up for our Nutrition program! It's available to anyone, anywhere: www.poundofcureweightloss.com/nutrition
Episode 30 of The Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast is titled, GLP-1 Supplement Scams.
In our In the News segment, we cover an article in Today titled, Poppi Prebiotic Soda Brand Faces Class-Action Lawsuit Over Gut Health Claims. Poppi is a brand of soda marketed as a prebiotic and this lawsuit is questioning the validity of the claim.
In our Patient Story segment, we talk to Graham who had a highest weight of 311 pounds. He opted for the gastric bypass and we included GLP-1 medications along the way. He is now comfortable sitting at 168 pounds. Not only did he embrace the medical treatments we offered but he also embraced strength training as another tool to help maintain that weight loss. His story is very poignant for anyone interested in sustainable weight loss.
In our Nutrition segment, we dive into another product review. Biocare is a supplement being marketed to GLP-1 users offering to, “Scientifically Help Reduce Side Effects, Preserve Lean Muscle Mass & Provide Essential Nutrition.” Does it work? Tune in to find out!
Anytime a new FAD diet emerges, the food, beverage, and service companies scramble to create products to fit the new trend. And, over the past year or so, we’ve seen this happen in the GLP-1 space. So, in our Economics of Obesity segment, we dive further into the growing market of GLP-1 supplements and services.
Finally, we answer 3 of our listeners questions including, our thoughts on Phentermine, when to start taking your vitamins post-op, and how to navigate the GLP-1 shortages.

I stalled at 2.4 so I went back down to .5 and am following Zoe's suggestions on the pod cast for nutrition and kick starting. I came in at almost 400lbs and stalled for months at 335lbs. The change in dose seems counter intuitive because 2.4 is the "Therapeutic" dose we have to titrate or build up to but ironically for me, going down in dosage did the trick. I feel it's mechanism of action with these GLP-1 glucagon peptides is in contrast with the efficacy or other meds and as a hormone, it really is dependent on the person.

I absolutely, hands down adore Dr. Weiner and his entire team! I gave up and was so depressed. I have never and any surgical procedure, hate it! Doc was understanding and absolutely has this remarkable approach to his patients. I was almost at four hundred pounds and am pretty much an expert of so many diets even Vegan! I watch all his podcasts and each is pure gold and has something that applies to me. I started hiking again with my eight year old daughter and am getting my life back without surgery. If you are taking Wegovy or Monjaro, your going to stall and that's why following the team's podcast on nutrition is key ever even if it is geared to pre/post op gastric patients! Love!

I love your podcast. It is one of the best out there for its honesty and practical information. Anyone prescribed GLP1 medications needs to first listen to Graham's comments on tuning out the haters, using the medication as a tool to level the playing field, and then putting in the work. Utmost respect for him and his journey.

I swear Graham and I are twins! I can totally relate to his rule following and striving to be the best he can be. I’m now at the stage he’s talked about which is in trying to maintain but also wanting to do so by building up my muscle mass so I’m taking in 1.5% of protein and working out if I need to increase my weight parameters to accommodate the muscle without further shrinking in size. Then working out how best to monitor and calculate how best to measure my maintenance. This is all new to me and I’m trying to embrace being flexible in my approach rather than my preferred rigidity of the past.

I lost 95lbs the year before my sleeve surgery. I lost about 20 of it during the liquid diet phase after the surgery because I practically had healthy soup I made & froze to eat & that's it. That was in 2016 & I kept off every pound I lost just by exercise alone. To date I have lost ZERO lbs having the surgery besides the liquid phase. Grew up with PCOS. MY doctors all my life consentrated on diets which NEVER worked for me. I can say I definitely craved less Carbs during my walking for a year straight at night 35-45 minutes. I tried to tell the Eggheads my problem was hormone related. I eat very little now but my body will NEVER lose a pound unless I exercise. (Shot my knees out, need surgery to be able to finish my journey.) 🤷‍♀️

I started at 372 10 months ahead of surgery, was 323 day of surgery in late Aug. 2023 and am currently 222. I am doing ok but am coming off of extensive travel where I have been very active but been eating out and am off track. Well, I'm can speak from my own experience as a VSG to RNY patient The only postoperative from my revision was dehydrated experienced a week out from surgery. I'm now 3 yrs post-op revision and I have zero complications. Other than some pre- menopausal weight gain that I'm using zepbound & back to wls basis to lose weight. When I had VSG, now that was a nightmare due to Gerd & stricture. I'm a member of those several FB wls groups. There are positive and negative after wls experiences.

So true. Do you wind up doing the same meal plans over and over again and that just does not help at all. I joined some vegan groups on Facebook because they have great healthy vegetable recipes. Now I’m not going to become vegan probably but I do eat some vegan meals through the week and I like vegetables on the side with some protein it helps me learn new things to fix to spice things up and helps keep me on track.

And the last decades we have been told that red meat is unhealthy, according to the WHO it falls in the same carcinogenic class as sigarettes. Use what is left of your brain 😅 We have been scavengers and later hunters for 2 millions of years. Our genes are fully adapted to eating red meat. Your stomach acids are even stronger that that of today predators. Your gut isn't that of gorilla's and chimps. Our brains developed on meat and have been shrinking the last 20.000 years since we started agriculture. Personally I don't like most beans, they make me fart and I know that they contain anti-nutrients. Their proteins are less bioabsorbable than those in meat and they don't have all the amino acids. Please only a small portion of my food as beans 😊

Well , I am in a facebook group for people who have had or are having Sleve to bypass revisions. Majority of the people have serious horrific complications. It’s like they’re trading one set of problems for a much worse set of problems.having the surgery except that the doctors don’t tell us how bad it can get. Now I’m on the fence I want to have the revision done, but I’m terrified to do it. I don’t think I’ll wind up going through it. And many of the people who have had the revision surgery and are having complications have said I didn’t know I was a guinea pig. I feel like they’re just using us to experiment on. I mean seriously that’s what it seems like. it’s not fair. People should be aware of how serious the complications can’t get
